One-in-ten motorists know someone who drives without car insurance (Dec 00) Recent research has revealed that nearly one-in-ten motorists (9%) know someone who drives a car, but is not covered by insurance, and six per cent admit that they have driven someone else's car even though they were not insured to do so. The shocking statistics come on the day that the motor insurance industry announced new measures to help reduce the number of people driving without insurance in the UK, which has one of the highest uninsured driving populations in Western Europe. Current penalties are clearly not acting as a deterrant. Honest drivers are having to fork out as much as £25 extra each year to pay for uninsured drivers. Hopefully, new measures, like the motor insurance database will enable insurers to reduce this burden.
